A PROUD FIRST-GENERATION HUNTER

My name is Ryan and welcome to Primitive Outdoors. I am a first generation hunter and it’s my goal to share as much insight and knowledge as I can with others be it a 1st or 5th generation hunter. Particularly what I have found in my short journey into the hunting world is that there is a lack of education and a large barrier to entry. From the outside looking in, hunting is perceived as this kind of exclusive club that you need to know someone to get in. At least thats how it felt for me and others I have spoken with. We all shared similar feelings.

Growing up we camped and did your typical outdoor things like camping and loading up in an RV for long road trips. We had family back in New York where we would go out to “camp” about every other year, stay in the family cabin, fish and spend tons of time outside. Hunting was never part of my life going up and being from Southern California you can probably assume why. As I grew older I started to take a greater interest in firearms, archery, and everything that came with it. I have always loved fishing, but something about hunting in general became more and more of a quest.

Having played sports all the way through college, I have always been competitive or at least in that same kind of environment. However as I grew older and sports were no longer part of my life in the physical sense, I became more interested in mental completion. For me, hunting provides this unique mix of mental challenges and acquired skills. Patience, perseverance, humbleness, critical thinking, adaptability, planning, etc. Hunting is as much of a mental game as it is a physical game.

I have been so very fortunate to have friends come along side me and guide me along my hunting journey. There is so much still to learn, but that is what excites me most. I still have this desire to grow as a hunter and further my skills as well as branch into new areas that hunting provides. Along with that personal desire, I have what I feel is an obligation to teach others what I have learned and bring up the next set of 1st generation hunters. This is my journey and I hope the start of your own as well.
